Course description

Content and Language Integrated Learning or CLIL basically describes both learning another (content) subject such as physics or math through the medium of a foreign language and learning a foreign language by studying a content-based subject. The basis of CLIL is that content subjects are taught and learned in a language which is not the mother tongue of the learners. It is of utmost importance today to learn foreign languages to communicate to the world, and when language is integrated into a broad curriculum, the process of learning gets much faster. In CLIL, learning is improved through increased motivation and the study of natural language seen in context. When learners are interested in a topic they are motivated to acquire language to communicate.

  Furthermore, CLIL is based on language acquisition rather than enforced learning. It is a much more natural process. Language is seen in real-life situations. This is natural language development which builds on other forms of learning. CLIL is long term learning as well. This course aims to present basic information to teachers about CLIL in the classroom. Our trainers will provide exercises and materials about integrating both content and language.

Objectives

  • Improve teaching and communication skills
  • Improve students` motivation to CLIL in the classroom
  • Learn how to teach different content in a foreign language
  • Provide teachers with practical ideas on how they can incorporate foreign language learning into their existing lessons
  • Familiarize teachers with online learning and how it can be applied in the CLIL lessons
  • Familiarize teachers with different ways to combining content and language
  • Allow teachers to create their own CLIL lesson plans

Follow-up

Trainees will be given soft and hard copies of all lesson materials, which they can present to their colleagues in their own organizations to generate interest in 21st-century teaching methods with creative thinking. In addition, a mailing list of participants will be created in order to exchange ideas/experiences. Self-evaluation materials will be provided. At the end of the course the participants will accomplish a questionnaire in order to get a detailed feedback for the effectiveness of the training event.

Day 9 – Tuesday

  • The benefits of approaching the language lexically rather than grammatically
  • Using different learning styles in CLIL

Day 10 – Wednesday
